What is Yoga?

Yoga is a practice that originated in ancient India and has been a part of the Indian culture for thousands of years. 

The word “yoga” comes from the sanskrit word “yuj” which means ‘to unite’ or ‘to join’. It is “union” or “integration” of individual consciousness (Atman) with ultimate consciousness (Brahman). Brahman is only the ultimate reality and the rest physical world is “Illusion” or “Maya“. It is a practice that aims to unite the mind, body, and spirit. It is pure science to achieve ultimate state of spiritual enlightenment. And the main purpose of Yoga is the union. The side benefits of Yoga is health (Swasthya). Today, in modern time the yoga is used for flexibility, health, therapy, etc.

Yoga in India is not limited to just spiritual practices but it is also been accepted as a physical and mental exercise. It is widely popular in India, and is a major part of the country’s health and wellness culture. Yoga is also been taught in schools and colleges, and it is also been included in many health and fitness centers.

In recent years, Yoga has gained popularity worldwide and many people now practice yoga for its physical and mental health benefits. International Yoga Day is being celebrated on 21st June every year to raise awareness about the benefits of yoga and to promote its practice.
